Declan Pocket Square - Review
About a year ago in one of my EDC update videos on YouTube, I put a call out for someone to find a handkerchief or pocket square that could double as a lens cleaning cloth for my glasses, camera lens, and technology screens. The trend of carrying a hank has seen a rebirth in the EDC community over the last year, with tons of new "custom" makers popping up and the prices of the more desirable makers skyrocketing (a good example of these being Huckleberry Woodchuck Hanks.) For my uses, I need something to clean my glasses primarily, tech devices secondly, and a third use would be for camera lenses in the field. I don't have a large need to blow my nose in public, and I'm not often saddled with bereft maidens in need of something to dab their tears...
Outside of a lens cloth, and the above uses, I am unsure of the use and need for hanks in general. From what I could find after I made this request to the EDC community were a selection of hanks that ranged from coarse clothed pieces that I'd never let touch a piece of glass, to handkerchiefs that had a nice microfiber on the backside, but still wouldn't clean lenses... Into this void came Declan.
Declan is a designer of pocket squares that specialize in lens cleaning applications. They developed proprietary fabrics called M120, or M220 which are different thickness materials that have the same cleaning properties. Declan designs their products to suit their customer's fashion senses as well as to be practical pieces of someone's daily routine. In a functional sense, they do EXACTLY what I was looking for in my original post. They will wipe all the face gunk off a pair of glasses and leave clean lenses behind. Declan offers two different sizes of cloth-- the large being the size of a normal handkerchief and roughly the same weight/thickness (12x12), and the smaller cloth resembling a thicker microfiber lens cloth (roughly 9x9).
To sum up my thoughts on the Declan cloths, they totally fulfilled all my requirements and desires in a handkerchief. It’s something I can easily fold into my EDC, and it retains all the functionality that I need out of a lens cloth. Declan frequently has older patterns on sale, or offer discount codes. Go check them out for sure!!!
